The Art of Beeswax Candles: Why Pure NZ Beeswax is Better

The Art of Beeswax Candles: Why Pure NZ Beeswax is Better

There is something quietly extraordinary about a beeswax candle. Before it is ever lit, it carries within it the labour of thousands of bees, the warmth of a New Zealand summer, and the hands of the person who poured it. At House of Leit, every candle begins with that understanding.

Two Ingredients. Nothing More.

Our candles are made with just two ingredients: 100% natural beeswax, and a 100% natural hemp wick. That is it. No additives, no synthetic fragrances, no fillers. Mother Nature's finest — and nothing else.

The beeswax is sustainably sourced from remote, spray-free landscapes in the Far North of New Zealand — a region of extraordinary natural purity, far from industrial agriculture and urban pollution. The hemp wick burns slowly and cleanly, without the carbon deposits or chemical coatings found in conventional wicks. Together, they make a candle that is as close to nature as a candle can be.

What Makes Pure Beeswax Different

Not all candles are created equal. The majority of candles sold today are made from paraffin — a petroleum by-product that releases toxins when burned. Soy wax, while a popular alternative, is often heavily processed and sourced from genetically modified crops.

Pure beeswax is different in almost every way. It is the only fuel that burns with a flame spectrally identical to sunlight, casting a warm, golden light that feels instinctively right. It burns cleaner and longer than paraffin — up to three times longer — and releases negative ions as it burns, which are known to neutralise pollutants and allergens in the air. For those with sensitivities, natural beeswax candles are often the only candle they can burn without irritation.

Our beeswax is 100% natural and sourced from New Zealand hives — unbleached, unrefined, and as close to the hive as possible. You will notice the natural honey scent the moment you open the box. That is not fragrance. That is beeswax.

Hand-Poured on Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island sits in the Hauraki Gulf, 40 minutes by ferry from Auckland. It is a place of vineyards, olive groves, and a long tradition of craft. It is where House of Leit was born, and where every candle is still made by hand.

Our Pure Beeswax Pillar Candles are poured in small batches, which means each one receives the attention it deserves. There is no rush, no compromise on quality, and no shortcuts in the process.

The Taper: A Study in Simplicity

The tapered candle is one of the oldest forms in candlemaking — elegant in its simplicity, timeless in its effect. Our Traditional Tapered Beeswax Candles and Tall Tapered Beeswax Candles are hand-poured to the same standard as our pillars, with a clean, straight burn and a natural honey tone that complements any interior.

Why It Matters

Choosing a beeswax candle is a small decision with a meaningful reach. It supports beekeeping — an industry critical to pollination and biodiversity. It avoids the petrochemicals and synthetic fragrances that dominate the mass market. And it brings into your home something made with genuine craft, from a place with a genuine story.

At House of Leit, we believe the objects you choose to live with should be worth choosing. Our handmade candles from Waiheke Island are made to that standard — and we hope you feel the difference the moment you light one.
